Why cycling in Tenerife is world class
(and ideal for mixed groups)

Tenerife has its reputation as one of the world’s most popular destinations for cycling for good reason. Boasting a rare combination of long, uninterrupted climbs from sea level to over 2,000 metres and a climate that’s rideable year round, it appeals to serious cyclists who are looking to build endurance and sharpen their climbing legs.
But what makes Tenerife especially appealing is how well it works for mixed groups. While experienced cyclists tackle iconic ascents like Mount Teide, non-riding companions can unwind on golden beaches, explore volcanic coastal trails, indulge in spa days, or head out on whale watching excursions. There are even family friendly cycling routes that everyone can enjoy.
Compared to other European destinations, Tenerife stands out for its predictable gradients, expansive route variety, and superior winter riding conditions. Riders can choose between steady coastal loops or full day summit pushes, with plenty of café stops and viewpoints along the way.
Bike Experience Tenerife, who offer bike rentals, gear, and guided tours, talked to us about why Tenerife is such a fantastic choice for cycling: “It’s impossible not to fall in love with it! The island has everything: sun, mountains, sea, and endless routes for all levels. Every ride is different, and the scenery feels like a new adventure every time. Plus, there’s a real cycling spirit here — you’ll meet friendly riders and feel part of the community immediately.”

Planning your Tenerife cycling holiday

There is plenty to consider when planning your cycling holiday to Tenerife. We have detailed some tips for cycling in Tenerife to help you make those critical decisions and so you can get on with looking forward to your break.
When to book a cycling holiday in Tenerife
Consider visiting in spring and autumn for milder temperatures more suited to riding (16°C – 26°C). Winter cycling in Tenerife can be excellent (temperatures typically range between 15°C and 22°C) but ensure to pack for cold summits and changeable winds. Summer temperatures of around 28°C can be challenging, so ensure to hydrate well and resist the most difficult climbs in the heat of the day.
Acclimatisation
As tempting as it might be to drop your bags (and even the kids) at the Resort before jumping straight on the bike, taking the time to acclimatise will make every ride better.
Plan a shorter first day in Tenerife, with time to settle in. Consider an easy coastal spin to start with, enjoy a nice meal, a swim in the pool, and when day two rolls around, you will be ready for those big climbs Tenerife is known for.
Hydration & nutrition
Tenerife is hot, particularly in the summer, so don’t underestimate your hydration needs. Packing two large bottles is a minimum requirement, as are planned refill points based on your route. In the rush of packing for what promises to be a memorable island escape, don’t forget some nutritious gels/chews for those long ascents and electrolytes to help replenish salts due to the heat.
Clothing & equipment
Pack plenty of layers, such as a gilet, arm warmers, and a lightweight shell for bike days, as well as comfortable casual attire for those lazy island evenings. Your essential cycling equipment will of course come with you, and there are plenty of cycle hire companies on the island if you want to pack.
Take the time to explore
Cycling in Tenerife is more than exercise; it’s an adventure. Bike Experience Tenerife shared with us the following advice for those planning a Tenerife cycling holiday: “Don’t just ride — explore! Tenerife is full of surprises: dramatic volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and coastal roads with amazing views. And if the hills feel intimidating, e-bikes are perfect, you can still enjoy every climb without missing the fun.”

The best Tenerife cycling routes

Tenerife’s diverse terrain offers some of the best routes for cyclists of all levels whilst showcasing the island’s unique geography. Here we take you through some of the best routes in Tenerife that you can enjoy.
Los Cristianos to Mount Teide
Distance: 73.6km
Regarded as the crown jewel of Tenerife cycling routes, there are several approaches from the south, west, and north up to Mount Teide, including some that see cyclists climb from sea level to over 2,300 metres. You can expect dramatic transitions that range from coastal banana plantations to pine forests and finally the lunar-like volcanic plateau.
Mike Bourt, CEO & Logistic Director at Cycling in Tenerife, highly recommends Mount Teide: “For strong riders looking for a challenge, a ride to or around Teide is ideal. The climbs, sustained gradients and varied scenery make it a perfect training ground and an unforgettable day on the road bike.”
When asked for his top tip for cyclists visiting Tenerife, Sander Kolsloot, Editor in Chief of Cycling Destination, pointed straight to Mount Teide. It’s the island’s most iconic ride and for good reason.
However, Kolsloot also suggested a scenic alternative for those looking to explore beyond the classic climb: Route 7, as listed on Komoot. This route offers a more varied experience, weaving through coastal roads, mountain passes, and lush valleys. It’s ideal for riders who want to see a broader slice of Tenerife’s natural beauty while avoiding the busier Teide traffic.
Masca and Teno lighthouse loop
Distance: over 100km
The ride to Masca, a village in the Teno mountains, features tight hairpins, sharp climbs and hair raising descents that plunge through the valley and down to the sea. The Mirador de Cherfe, regarded as one of the most dramatic rides in Europe, descends towards Buenavista del Norte and features breathtaking scenery with high cliff faces, stunning coastlines, and a great view over to La Gomera.
Anaga National Park Loop
Distance: 64-km-92km (different routes available)
Located on the Northeastern tip of Tenerife, one of the most iconic routes is the Anaga National Park Loop. With its dramatic landscapes, winding mountain roads, lush laurel forests, breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and deep ravines, Anaga National Park is a fantastic destination for cycling enthusiasts, and on this route, you can experience all of this.
Sander Kolsloot from Cycling Destination says cyclists planning a trip to Tenerife should consider heading north to the Parque Rural de Anaga. Though less known than Teide, Anaga provides a rewarding ride through one of Tenerife’s most ecologically rich regions. It’s a must for cyclists who want to explore beyond the typical tourist routes and immerse themselves in the island’s wild side.
Santiago Del Teide to El Chyniero
Distance: 9km to 33 km (different routes available)
Cycling through the stunning landscapes surrounding Santiago del Teide offers an unforgettable journey across Tenerife’s volcanic heart. This route is an off road adventure that attracts many mountain bikers, boasting a mix of gentle climbs and descents that gradually reveal sweeping views of the island’s northeast coast, including picturesque towns such as La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, and Garachico. The route also winds through the rugged terrain near Montaña Negra, leading to the dramatic Chyniero lava cone, site of the island’s last major eruption in 1909.
Mike Bourt from Cycling in Tenerife says, “For groups with children or mixed abilities, I recommend e-bike tours, such as routes around Chyniero. E-bikes let everyone cover the planned distances while coping with Tenerife’s frequent climbs, so the ride stays enjoyable and inclusive.”
