Christmas decorations on the streets of Malaga city, Andalusia

If you are staying at one of our Costa del Sol resorts, which are under an hour away from Malaga, you should head to the city at night to experience the incredible lights and decorations that light up the streets.

Every year, the length of Calle Larios is turned into a winter wonderland full of lights and decorations. The switch-on date for these and other lights is usually on 29 November, and they are widely considered the best Christmas lights in Spain.

There is a musical light show every day at 6.30pm, 8pm and 10pm (apart from 24 and 31 December), and the lights are put on daily from 6.30pm until midnight. The ‘Angel of Light’ video mapping (3D animated images) on the Malaga Cathedral is usually projected onto its southern tower.

You’ll be in awe if you visit Malaga’s Lantern Festival, a new Christmas event that has been formed. The traditional Chinese New Year celebrations have inspired the festival, and it takes place from 30 November 2024 to 15 February 2025.

The festival turns Malaga city’s Parque del Oeste into a space full of light, art, and Chinese tradition, and it will feature more than 600 large lanterns and 4,000 sources of light. The lanterns will range from snakes, dragons, pandas, and elephants, and they come in all shapes and sizes.

The Lantern Festival is not just about illumination; it is a cultural immersion that allows you to connect with the history and customs of China through a unique art form. Malaga becomes the perfect setting for this journey through light as it will be a 360° immersive experience.

There is a dedicated route that you can take through the park, and it will be transformed for the occasion. There will be a variety of shows and activities that will make it an unforgettable experience for everyone who attends.

Festive shows

From ballet shows to theatrical performances, Christmas is not the same without watching a festive show. Fortunately, Malaga boasts a variety of shows that make the festive period even more magical.

If you want to watch a ballet show, the Tchaikovsky National Ballet regularly performs at the FYCMA, whilst the Kyiv Ballet performs The Nutcracker has previously performed at the Cervantes Theatre. There are many theatrical performances that you can enjoy, such as Swan Lake, which is also performed at the Cervantes Theatre.

These biblical scenes are micro-sized and as well as featuring the Holy Family, they include highly detailed models of houses, food stalls, workshops, palm trees, exotic animals, and water features.

These nativity scenes can be found in public buildings, shops, churches, homes, and offices across Malaga. Some of the most well-known nativity scenes can be found at Malaga’s Cathedral, which boasts a huge nativity scene.
